This actually fits nicely with his last memory, which is when he developed his pain tolerance! The IC explanation is that after weeks of intense torture, teenage Jacen learns to just fucking deal with it. Painful surprises will put him out of commission for a few seconds until he can adjust, but "taking a fuckton of damage and still going" is legit one of his scarier villain traits.

Too lazy for more of a writeup.

Jacen actually gets his ass powercapped in canon and has a melodramatic breakdown, so I figured I'd put the clip up. Please forgive Matt Stover's uber-purple space prose.

She laughed. 'There are no Jedi here.' )

Edit: Uhhh the Solo kids also get powercapped in Crystal Star, but that's more like they get smothered whenever they try anything flashy that gets attention from the guy holding them prisoner. They can (and do) do unflashy stuff indefinitely.

Okay, so you saw Star Wars, right? (Right?) This is Jedi emotional sensitivity, awareness of the energy of living things, etc., except that Jacen's innately more sensitive than most other Jedi. His empathy is especially strong with animals. It's a well and canon established fact that significant loss of life hurts Jedi -- Obi-Wan in ANH, Yoda at Order 66, the Solo kids in The New Rebellion, Allana in Fury, etc. -- but it usually doesn't seriously fuck them up.

Now, as for the animal stuff. The best short example is from The Lost Ones. Bear in mind Jacen is a teenager in this.

He weaponizes that ability in Star by Star against the Voxyn -- projecting strong feelings of "hey bad things! Stay put!" or "Those guys are gonna kill you! Go use your sonic bark poison tail uber powers on them!" and whatnot to influence their behavior. He sends images and feelings, and based on the animal's state of mind, they usually respond accordingly.
